Happy, from award-winning director Laura Dudgeon, is a film about first experiences.

The opening title was a long process of evolution and variation before the desired balance of simplicity and impact was achieved, remaining sensitive to the events and mood bookending the title card.

Colour combinations lifted from the graded footage were explored in combination with references from the director’s mood boards. Ultimately the title card used the colours of the rocks and sky from the following shots, with the title then integrated into that same shot, and both main characters appearing to acknowledge it’s presence. It then types itself off, as if second guessing…

The end credits reference the visual motifs of light and water present throughout the film. Type is revealed under the surface of a shallow pool, as ripples and caustics wash through the type, distorting our vision for the briefest of moments. A small hint of chromatic aberration brings a touch of sunlight to the animation.
