TWTWB Titles Pitch
Title Sequence Pitch: Concept, Boards, Design, Direction, Typography, Logo Design, Words
The film adaptation of John Marsden’s classic Australian novel was a design opportunity not to be missed. As the Design Director of the Lab Sydney (the primary VFX vendor), I was keen to push production to consider a title sequence for the film.
No brief – just a self initiated submission to the Director.
Even though there was no official scope for the LaB to work on anything more than VFX, I was undeterred, and spent a month of my own time (nights, weekends and early mornings) working up several concepts, based on my own knowledge of the books (studied in high-school!) and what I had seen of the VFX work on the film so far. Having no formal brief or indications of time or budget, my pitch comprised several concepts, each with a different take on the emotions and themes of the narrative, and each with a different production approach – big or small budget, and either live-action or graphics-based.
The crossover of styles and budgets resulted in 4 treatments: “Black/White/Yellow”, “Mapping the Invasion”, “Scenes of Destruction”, and “Showground”. My pitch document not only outlined my enthusiasm for the project, but was accompanied with an in-depth explanation of why each treatment and their choices of imagery, colour, pace, audio, etc, supported the narrative and themes of the film, and how each could draw a different response from the audience.
Presenting the finished document to the Lab (surprised) and the TWTWB crew (pleased), including producer Andrew Mason (Dark City, The Matrix, Silent Hill) and director Stuart Beattie, I was awarded the job.
I’d love you to check out the final titles here (Stuart Beattie’s modification of Black/White/Yellow), and also see collateral generated in the process here, including poster design, DVD/BluRay menus and disc artwork, iTunes artwork, and book covers.
