Film Collateral – Posters, Book Covers, DVD and BluRay Menus and Disc Art – Design, Art Direction, Illustration
While in the early stages of concept design for the Tomorrow When the War Began titles, I mocked up some poster designs using images from my boards, as yet another way of determining which images were most iconic.
I believe that movie posters can often be the first point of contact between film and potential audience-member, (whether on a trailer site or on the street) and so first impressions are vital. An appealing poster can lead to trailer views, and then a decision to buy tickets later down the track.
I also believe that good title design can and should extend into good key art and movie branding (including any and all applications of logo and type), and as such titles should be considered early on in the filmmaking process.
Once the TWTWB titles were complete, I revisited the poster concepts to see what had changed or progressed. I kept some images from the original exercise, and added others that we came up with during titles development. The results are seen below.
The logo design used in the posters is from my pitch to the TWTWB EP Andrew Mason and Director Stuart Beattie. The logo seen on the book cover and iTunes artwork is the logo the design team developed for the opening slates of the film, and is loosely based on the “official” TWTWB logo (chosen and approved before I even pitched). The book cover was commercially produced in a limited run for a charity auction.
Title designs were also used on the DVD and BluRay disc artwork, as well as the menus of both discs, and (finally) for the iTunes artwork for the single “Tomorrow”, which plays under the main-on-end title sequence.
